    Condition as seen.   Letter from Chester H Ballard 37th Mass dated Jan 10th 65 Near Petersburg VA.  4 pages in ink to his parents.  Talks about an inspection in his company, dealing with clothing,  "considerable firing across the lines"   quiet today, pickets being friendly, getting up a
    reconnaissance
    in force, doesn't want the campaign to commence to early this spring, "I am a veteran of 16 pitched battles",  have lain under artillery fire for 38 days,  not much news on the regiment and much much more.  Nice letter.
