    Description

Condition as seen.  Fantastic four page in Ink Letter from Captain Henry Haymond 18th US Infantry on the Battles of Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain.  Full
    transcription
in the pictures above.   Some of the better content.  "Our brigade ordered on Pickett on the morning of the 22nd Nov and were not
    relieved
until the morning of the 25th.
    Skirmishing
commenced on the left of our line on Nov 23d our troops driving the enemy one mile and holding the ground.  On the 24th Hookers troops stormed Lout Out Mtn thus turning the Enemies left, Sherman crossed the river four miles above and got into position that night.  Before daylight the enemy evacuated our front and fell back and occupied Missionary ridge.  A ridge of hills as high as Pinikaniek and strongly fortified.  Sherman on the extreme left commenced fighting early in the day.  Our brigade was formed on the left of the Rossville Rd in two lines.  At a given signal 20000 men advanced to storm the heights.  Our advance was uninterrupted until we commenced crossing the wide open plains that lies at the foot of the hill.  When a terrific fire of artillery and musketry was opened upon us.  We advanced steadily and drove the Enemy from the Rifle Pits at the front of the hill and
    advanced
to the storm the stronger works on the summit.  The hill was very steep and covered with rocks, fallen trees and the Ridge lined with Riflemen and Artillerymen.  It took an hour hard fighting to carry this last work which we finally did completely routing the enemy capturing many prisoners and several pieces of artillery.  I made many narrow escapes but off safely.  One shell struck in front of my battalion  bounced directly over my head and burst a few feet behind me.  I had 13 wounded men, the 1st
    battalion
the same.  On the morning of the 26th we started in pursuit passing over the extreme left of the Chickamauga battlefield and at 7
    o'clock
PM overtook the Enemies Rear Guard capturing a Battery and quite a number of prisoners.  We came near capturing Lt
    Beauregard
(a son of the General) who commanded the Battery.  .....  Plus much more on the chase of Hoods army etc.
Great content about a very important battle in Tennessee.
