Description
Offering a very interesting, professionally framed page from the Harper's Weekly Journal of Civilization, published in New York City. This is dated: March 5, 1864 towards the end of the American Civil War, and is a full engraving from page 156.The wonderfully detailed picture is of women at a post office. They are asking for their mail, writing letters to soldiers at the front and putting up notices for the Sanitary Commission. The legend at the bottom reads: "ANY THING FOR ME, IF YOU PLEASE?" - Post -Office of the Brooklyn Fair in Aid of the Sanitary Commission.
This is an original page from the 1864 magazine and not a reproduction. The paper is in excellent condition, although there is a small straight tear on one side, almost unseen because the picture is under glass. The print is framed and matted and the wood frame is a beautiful double layer, painted black with a crackled gold accent. The entire framed picture measures 13" X 18".
