4th, 6th NJ Infantry Soldier Remarks On Reconnaissance, Marching -- With Cover

The 4th New Jersey Infantry Regiment was organized at Trenton, NJ, on April 27th, 186, for three months.  The regiment was honored by a visit from President Lincoln.  Most of the first three months were spent guarding the bridge over the Potomac and the Orange and Alexandria Railroad.  After being reorganized, the regiment saw action in many major battles, including Gettysburg, Seven Days, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Bull Run, Second Battle of Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, South Mountain, Petersburg, Appomattox and the surrender of Lee and his army. The reorganized 4th was mustered out on July 9th, 1865, at Hall’s Hill, VA.
Meanwhile, the 6th New Jersey Infantry Regiment was formed, which was made up of many soldiers from the 4th.
George W. Hill was mustered into K Co. of the 4th on April 27th, 1861. While research indicates he mustered out on July 31, 1861, his letters extend well beyond that date clearly indicating that he remained in the army. In this letter, the 4th New Jersey has apparently become the 6th.
3 pp, 5 x 7 3/4, writing from Camp, 6th Regt. NJ Vols, February 28th, [n.y.] to his sister, “...The 6th Corps is on a Reconnaissance and the remainder of the army is under marching orders ready to move at a moment’s notice...By the time you have seen some of the boys from Co. F...I will have no duty...I am done working for Gen. Mott. There is 8 men left in Co. F. I am acting first sergeant of them so that excuses me from all kinds of duty like picket and guard...I hear that those that has re-enlisted will be assigned to the army of the Potomac...Yesterday I had dinner that put me in mind of a horse...Composed of boiled pork, cabbage, turnips, and to top off we had a half dozen minced pies...”
Even toning. Letter is light in places but readable. A couple of fold splits reinforced with archival tape.  Comes with original cover, which has some soiling. This regiment was in some major battles.
