FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPINGAbsolutely an original item, not a reproduction. This item is a "folded letter" in philatelic terms--a Confederate States of America item of "Postal History" to be more precise.
There was no envelope. The sender wrote the letter, folded it and placed a dab of wax to seal it. Then it was addressed and taken to the post office where markings were applied. This is a "soldier's due" letter - the sender wrote their name and rank and the addressee paid the postage.
An absolutely wonderful one page letter datelined "Orange C. H. Va., April 2 1862" and headed "Mr. J. Landon Brown, Dear Sir" and signed "Very Truly Yours, James C. Hiden, Chaplain of The Post of Orange C. H." The writer wrote "From Rev. J. C. Hiden, Chaplain C. S. A." on the obverse and addressed the letter "Mr. J. Landon Brown, Sharon P. O., Madison Co., Miss." The Orange, Virginia postmaster applied a "ORANGE C. H. Va. APR 3" black circular datestamp and a "DUE 10" marking.
Content:
"Your brother W. B. Brown is here sick in the Hospital. He was taken sick at Leesburg and has been brought here. He has as his Physician Dr. W. P. Finley of your County, who is doubtless doing all he can to make him comfortable. He is very low, and is quite weak. I am a Baptist Minister, and visit the Hospitals here regulary, and am doing what I can to aid the sick. Your brother asked me to write to you for him, and I cheerfully comply. I shall visit him regularly, and render him any service in my power. May the Lord in mercy spare his life and render it useful to his Country!"
This is a marvelous item in excellent condition.
