Early life and education Charles Henry Morgan was born inCuba, New Yorkon July 5, 1843. His family moved toPewaukee, Wisconsinin 1845. He attendedFond du Lac High SchoolinFond du Lac, Wisconsinin 1861. After theCivil War, he went toAlbanyand graduated fromAlbany Law Schoolin 1865. Career Military career During the Civil War, he enlisted in theUnion Armyand rose fromPrivate (rank)tocaptainin the First Regiment and Twenty-first Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. During theSpanishAmerican Warhe was alieutenant colonelof the Fifth Missouri Volunteer Infantry. Law career He beganpracticing lawinLamar, Missouri. In 1868 he wasprosecuting attorneyofBarton County, Missouri; member of theMissouri House of Representativesin 187274. He practiced until 1884, and then he went intocoalandzinc mining. Political career He served as aDemocraticcongressman in 187579, 188385 (during which he was chairman,Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department) and 189395. He was elected as aRepublicanin 1908 and served 19091911. In 1907 he moved toJoplin, Missouri. Personal life Morgan married Clara Washburn, daughter of Judge Washburne ofOshkosh, Wisconsin, on March 14, 1877.He had a son, Frank B. Morgan. Death Morgan died ofpneumoniaon January 4, 1912 inJoplin, Jasper County,Missouri. He is interred in Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo.
