Civil War LetterConfederate Civil War Letter written by an unidentified soldier from Mississippi - who reports they has survived the Battle of Chancellorsville ! The letter is partial but still compelling content.
This Civil War soldier letter was written by a Confederate soldier likely from Mississippi, who penned the letter from Camp Gregg, eight miles south of Fredericksburg. The letter reassures the folks in Mississippi that he and James were “well and hearty,” having survived the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Although the envelope is addressed to Rowan Garmon of Pontotoc county, Mississippi, the letter seems to be addressed to “Mr. Love” whom I assume was 53 year-old Henry O. A. Love, a farmer and the only one by that surname in Pontotoc county. Rowan Garmon was married to Elizabeth C. Love (1831-1911). The Garmon’s were married (1839) in Cabarrus, North Carolina, and had relocated to Lee county, Mississippi, by 1860.

Camp Gregg
To Mr. Love,
I drop you a few lines to answer the few lines that I received from Mrs. Cornellier requesting me to write you a line or two to let you know the condition of myself and James. Both well and hearty. Came through the battle untouched. We can both say thank God for his mercies for they endure forever, said David.
I received a letter from you Monday after I came out of the battle on Sunday evening. I wrote you a letter on Monday that I was still living. I wrote you on Friday after the fight took place and I had returned to camp on Friday. I wrote you on Sunday which was the Sunday after the battle and also I wrote the doctor one in the [same] time. I have not had any letter from you—only the letter that Aaron and you sent together and I answered that. I have written you four letters since the battle ended.
I saw the doctor H. Kelly on Sunday the 17th, that you wrote to me and he took dinner with us—ham, biscuit and Confederate tea. I was glad to hear from you and the family and I was glad to see the doctor, you may be sure, and felt proud to think that he had called to see me. The doctor was looked on as being most respected by all that spoke of him and you know that I left no rum to be spoiled when inquired after by the officers of the regiment.
