Fascinating grouping of Civil War letters from Captain George Collings of the 24th OVI which was the 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment. The 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Jackson and Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio and mustered in for three years’ service on June 17, 1861, under the command of Colonel Jacob Ammen. The grouping contains five letters from Captain Collings who was from Adams County, Ohio this was Adams County's first offering in the civil war. To be exact concerning this company and Captain Collings it was mustered into service June 13, 1861. The original officers were: Moses Patterson, captain; Armstead T. M. Cockerill, first lieutenant; Lafayette Foster, second lieutenant. Patterson died Sept. 2, 1861, and Cockerill succeeded him and became lieutenant colonel of the regiment. Isaac N. Dryden, killed at the battle of Chickamauga, was the third captain and George Collings was the fourth. Captain Collings was an educated man and these letters indicate this. This grouping of letters is part of an important and extensive archive associated with the
Collings/Kirker family of Adams Co., Ohio
that I have listed in my shop. The Archive over-all consists of materials from the Kirker-Collings-Gibson family of Adams Co., Ohio, from just before statehood to the end of the 20th century. Two of the progenitors of this clan are James R. Gibson and his wife, Martha King Gibson.
These Civil War letters listed here appear to have been accumulated and come through Mary King Collings, who, it appears never married.
