Description
A series of three incredible Civil War Letters dated July the 10
th
1862 and the 14
th
of 1863 and July 31
st
1862 from and regarding soldier
Elisha Stivers. Elisha served in Company E, 7th Kentucky Infantry. He enrolled in the army and was mustered in at Camp Wildcat on October 26, 1861. He died on March 13, 1863 on the U. S. Hospital Steamer "D. A. January" at Young's Point, Louisiana from Chronic Diarrhea.
The first two letters comes from Elisha to his wife and they are painful to read. He wonders why she has not written him and pleas that if he has done anything to cause this please except his loving apologies? He lists his children’s names and describes the pain he is feeling on the battlefield and in his heart.
The final letter dated ‘the 14
th
1863’♠ informs Adeline Stivers that Elisha has died (Research through Civil War archives indicate Elisha Stivers died on the deck of the hospital Steamer “D.A. January”). The letter further states how his brother Robert Stivers also was killed in battle. ( Detailed military pension records concerning death of Robert included in this listing below)
