An original Civil War petition from a group of prominent Ringgold County citizens to Iowa Governor James Kirkwood seeking a promotion for First Sergeant Peter James, G Company, 4th Iowa Volunteers, attesting to his abilities & Union sentiments , and signed by 9 Iowans incl Joseph Wamer & John Finley of Leon, Iowa, both formerly 4th Iowa, also Sheriff George Woodbury, Judges William W Ellis & Samuel Forrey, JP Finley, AS Updegraff, and George W Hale, brother-in-law of the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith. 1p 14 x 8" ink. Edge cuts, age spots, Overall VG. Undated, Comes w service info- promoted to 1st Sgt 1863, Sergeant James was wounded at Chickasaw Bayou & mustered out in 1864. Captain JP Finley of Leon, one of the signers, also served w the 4th Iowa and lost his arm at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, was mustered out in 1864 dating the letter to late 1864-early 1865.Welcome to my Ebay Auctions and Ebay Store.
