Fort Totten, a 40 gun fort built near the Trent River in 1862 was post to the 5th Rhode Island Artillery in 1864. An original Civil War Union Army Pay Voucher for Lt Lewis H Bowen, 5th Rhode Island issued at Fort Totten, New Bern, NC, January 11, 1864 for pay for Lt Bowen & his ' " black" servant Holmes Middleton ', sgd by Lt Bowen, 5th RI Volunteer Infantry. 1p 11 x 16" ptd/ink. Agfe stains, Overall Good. Comes with service info: the 5th RI served at Hatteras, New Berne, Kinston, Goldsboro, Albemarle & Little Washington, North Carolina.
